Pedagogy

Goal: To learn how to identify and analyse current pedagogy.

TPCK ModelMy work in this area relates to The TPCK model proposed by Mishra, Koehler and Harris. I decided to develop this model and survey the teachers at my current school, on their preference for various “activity structures” and created a survey which was sent to all staff.

These results were collected and collated, and published to the College Blogsite. A copy of the published results and some comments from Staff can be seen here.

As might have been expected, there is a common culture in the college that tends towards the traditional, teacher-centred, exam-driven classrooms. Reading and annotating text and watching presentations scored highly in the survey.

Subsequently I have published documents and assisted Staff to include different activities that achieve the same outcomes as those indicated by the preferences survey. One such document, shown here, lists all software programs currently available to staff, and links to the activity survey. It will remain as a reference document as I meet with with more Staff to discuss their programming for next year.

  1. The documents are a little slow to load…….but they represent a start in identifying the pedagogy that underlies the teaching and learning processes that are evident in our classrooms. Ideally, I want to encourage teachers to locate alternative methods because I consider it more likely that technology will be used, if it can be shown that the same outcomes can be achieved, but in a more efficient and engaging manner. Current efforts are directed towards coaching in the use of available software to show how occurs in practice.
